List Building Tips on Your Website

May 19th, 2011 Jeff D McQueen

Have you ever wondered why some websites seem to be so successful at finding new email list members while other websites are not? There are many different tips and techniques that can be applied to any website to help improve the number of people that signup for your list. If you follow these guidelines, you'll see your list building take an immediate upward turn.

To begin with, you of course need to have signup options directly on your website. Knowing this, there are many more specific ways that you can encourage people to signup for your list. The first of these ways relates to how prominently your signup information is displayed.

Many websites make the mistake of placing their signup button somewhere hidden away in the bottom of a sidebar or on the footer of a page. You actually want to display your signup information as prominently as possible. This means putting the signup button in a position above the fold of your website. Above the fold refers to the location of your website that a visitor does not need to scroll down in order to see. Something located there is therefore guaranteed to be seen, and this is the area of your website that should include the most important, engaging and eye catching information.

Besides including your signup form above the fold, you need to be sure you include it on every single page of your website. If you have it stashed away on a "Request more information" page then only the people who go to that page will have the opportunity to signup. Instead of doing that, you should have the signup form available on each and every page of your site. This will ensure that everyone has an opportunity to see your signup button and to take action. It's all about increasing the odds that someone finally takes action and signs up.

Another important thing to remember is that your signup button or link is a part of your website design. Therefore, you should customize the button or the link to match your overall look and feel, and to blend in with your chosen color schemes and formatting. People will then recognize it as something you specifically are offering.

Additionally, you can increase the number of people that signup for your email list by making the signup form itself as easy as possible. Research shows that the longer the signup form is, the less people will actually complete it. Therefore you don't want to display some huge form with 20 questions that looks like it will take forever to complete. Keep your questions short, sweet an easy to complete. Find out the essential information you need about a person and leave it at that. You can find out more down the line with surveys and based on their behavior and patterns.

As you can see, there are many design and deployment strategies beyond the obvious that can have an effect on the results that you enjoy. If you pay attention to all of these tips, then you will see much better success with your list building efforts on your website.
